Antananarivo, May 16, 7:45 a.m. – The revival of the tourism sector continues on the Big Island. The statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and Crafts continue to show improvements even if the level of 2019, the year considered as a reference before the Covid-19 pandemic period, has not yet been reached. Thus, in April 2024, the figures revealed in the April 2024 Tourism and Crafts Review show 20,895 tourists in April 2024, compared to 18,657 tourists for the same period in 2023, an increase of 12% . In April 2019, official figures are 24,035 tourists.
Over the first quarter of 2024, Madagascar recorded 57,778 tourists, compared to 50,447 during the same period in 2023. Which is an increase of 14.5%. In 2019, the first quarter saw 65,070 tourists visit the Big Island. However, these figures are still far from those of 2008, the year during which Madagascar recorded the record number of visits before the 2009 crisis occurred.
According to data archived by the Confederation of Tourism, the first four months of 2008 saw the arrival of 96,012 tourists on the Big Island, including 27,850 in April 2008. In 2008, the total number of tourists recorded by Madagascar was to 375,010, up from 225,487 in 2023. In 2019, the total number of tourists reported by the ministry is 274,119.
