Designed by Fafy Ratsimaholizanany, the bassfafy is named after its creator. Purely Malagasy invention, it is an accompaniment instrument to play with feet. After a few years of development, the Bassfafy was officially registered with the Malagasy Office for Industrial Property (OMAPI).
During the official presentation of the invention patent, the director of the Omapi congratulated the artist, stressing that the Bassfafy is now a protected brand, allowing its designer to benefit from an operating monopoly on this instrument. This initiative was welcomed by the director of the Malagasy Office for Copyright (OMDA), as well as by the Secretary General and the Director General of the Ministry of Communication and Culture.
Fafy Ratsimaholizanany is best known as director of the Ratsimaholy winner editions. His notoriety is notably linked to textbooks, such as The CEPE winner, the BEPC winner And The Bacc winner. But he is also a musician and luthier. Passionate about bass, he wanted a light and slightly bulky instrument to play with feet. This is how the idea of Bassfafy was born, which he then materialized and baptized by his name.
If we talk about fingering for other instruments, playing bassfafy is based on a foot game. The instrument is played with the arch and the heel, while avoiding using the toes. He has acquired a certain popularity in temples and churches, where he has often been placed under keyboards for about three years. Although it is frequently associated with keyboards, Bassfafy also allows musicians to play other instruments simultaneously, such as wind instruments, string instruments or other accessories.
In 2021, its designer took the necessary steps for the national and international registration of the instrument, following the PCT application procedure, followed by an international publication. This patent, which constitutes an exclusive right conferred by the Omapi, protects a new invention and likely of industrial application. At the end of 2023, the OMAPI confirmed the obtaining of the invention patent n ° 868, which was officially issued in February 2024.
