259,850 international tourists visited Madagascar in 2023, an increase of more than 97% compared to 2022.
In December 2023, the Big Island recorded 30,718 international visitors, thus exceeding the number of visitors in December 2019 (25,319 tourists recorded), a flagship year for tourism.
According to data from the Ministry of Tourism and Crafts, the top 10 nationalities visiting the Big Island remain unchanged compared to 2022. Note, however, that the Czech Republic has left the ranking in favor of China.
In 2023, 43% of visitors are of French nationality, 13% are Italian, 9% are Malagasy residing abroad, 3% come from Poland and the rest come from the United States or Germany.
In terms of revenue, 534,084,248 euros in foreign currency revenue were recorded for the year 2023, almost double the previous year (351,577,003 euros), it is reported.
Note that the destination Madagascar occupies 9th place in the ranking of the 25 best islands in the world to visit in 2024, established by US News Travel. The exceptional biodiversity which constitutes the major attraction of international tourism in Madagascar is particularly highlighted in this ranking.
Nearly 80% of Madagascar’s fauna and flora are endemic. 100% of lemur species, 92% of reptiles and 99% of amphibians recorded in Madagascar are also endemic to the Big Island.
