
The International Day of Monuments and Sites (JIMS), created since 1982, is celebrated each year on April 18.
To mark this date, a reflection workshop on the built heritage resilient in the face of disasters and conflicts will take place this day at the National Library Anosy.
It is organized on the initiative of ICOMOS Mag, the Malagasy National Committee for ICOMOS, and of the Ministry of Communication and Culture.
ICOMOS as a reminder, is a non-governmental international organization that works for the conservation of monuments and sites around the world.
Awareness of the public and the actors concerned
JIMS 2025 celebrations bring as a global theme “resilient heritage in the face of disasters and conflicts”. They will focus on the 60th anniversary of ICOMOS in terms of heritage safeguarding. They also highlight its future objectives in prevention, mitigation, preparation of emergency response and recovery to take to protect the heritage during the crisis.
This day dedicated to sites and monuments is the unique opportunity to raise public awareness of the conservation and protection of cultural resources of universal importance threatened by growing disasters and conflicts.
This day’s reflection workshop also aims to mobilize the actors of the built heritage to make them aware of resilience in the face of disasters and conflicts, to promote the synergy of the application of legal instruments and to develop a resilience strategy to prepare from a national and scientific point of view.
The case of the capital on the carpet
Several presentations will therefore be planned on this morning. Namely “violence against sites and monuments and their resilience”, in particular the case of the capital, Antananarivo.
The protection zone of architectural, urban and landscape heritage (ZPPAUP) and the conservation of built cultural heritage, especially the high city of the capital, will also be mentioned. It will be a question of the authenticity and the integrity of the Bāti cultural heritage of the high city.
A member of the scientific commission of the Office of the Cultural Site of Ambohimanga Rova (Oscar) will share experiences on the case of the protection zone of the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga, a world heritage.
In addition, discussions on national resilience strategies in the face of disasters and conflicts are also planned for the program.
The workshop will start at 9 am.
