TRAVEL - 534 million euros in foreign exchange revenue generated by tourism in 2023 | 2424.mg


Antananarivo, February 13, 3:30 p.m. – An increasing contribution. Tourism in Madagascar generated 534 million euros in foreign exchange earnings for the country in 2023. This is almost double what this sector generated in 2022, indicates the information bulletin for the month of January, published by the Ministry of Tourism and Crafts. This contribution has followed an upward trend over the last three years even if it is still below the 655 million euros in foreign exchange earnings generated by tourism in 2019.

The tourism sector recorded a good performance, with the number of arrivals almost doubling. The Big Island recorded 259,851 tourists in 2023 compared to 132,018 tourists in 2022, an increase of 97%, according to the Banky foiben’i Madagasikara (BFM) report. This statistic in 2023 was 15% away from reaching the level in 2019, continues the Ministry of Tourism and Crafts.

France also remains the leading country sending tourists to Madagascar, representing 37.43% of tourist arrivals in the country. Italy is in second position, with 13.32%. The top 10 nationalities visiting the Big Island remain exchanged, however with the Czech Republic dropping out of the ranking in favor of China, indicates the Ministry of Tourism.

The year 2024 starts with 11,250 tourist arrivals in January. This is already more than the 10,310 tourists recorded in January 2023 even if this number of tourist arrivals is still below the 14,944 who arrived in January 2019.
