Sar’Nao Festival: Artificial intelligence in photography, at the heart of the debates

Music: Artists on tour

Technological advances, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), are raising more and more questions in the creative and artistic fields.

“Although artificial intelligence or AI represents a significant challenge, it also offers a unique opportunity to innovate and redefine photography.” In any case, this is what emerged from the conference-debate organized as part of the SAR’nao photography festival and Digital November at the Alliance Française in Antananarivo, last Saturday November 30.

The conference, moderated by Heritiana Manantsoa, saw the intervention of Julie Bonzon, international professional photographer, Masy Andriantsoa, founder and CEO of Ymagoo and president of UPPM, Toky Randriambololonirina, photographer-expert in music, multimedia and Graphic designCEO of the company CRACK MEDIA and finally Fidisoa Ramanahadray, artist-photographer and coordinator of the SAR’nao Photography Festival.

This event brought together artists, media professionals, communication and multimedia students, around a burning question: is AI an asset or a threat for the future of photography?

The discussions highlighted the significant advances brought by artificial intelligence in the photographic field. From automated image processing to improving resolutions and colors, to the democratization of generative art, AI is redefining the boundaries of creativity. For many stakeholders, these tools open up new artistic perspectives and facilitate the work of professional and amateur photographers.

However, beyond technical prowess, AI raises questions about authenticity when a machine intervenes. Several speakers also mentioned the risk of loss of artistic identity in the face of standardized productions generated by algorithms. Another crucial point addressed concerns ethical issues. The misuse of AI to generate fictitious images, manipulate reality or falsify visual materials poses a major challenge.

Many participants called for clear regulations to govern these practices and preserve the integrity of photography. The key lies in thoughtful and responsible use of these technologies, with enhanced education for artists and professionals.

This conference-debate at the initiative of the SAR’nao Festival marks an important step in better understanding the impact of artificial intelligence on a field as fundamental as photography », explains Fidisoa Ramanahadray
