As part of the Pulse program, the highlight before Dance, the festival dedicated entirely to dance at the initiative of the French Institute of Madagascar (IFM), a solo of the Reunionese choreographer and artistic director of the Kompani Soul City, Didier Boutiana, will be presented at IFM Analakely this Saturday afternoon, September 13. This is a solo entitled “Kanyar Who designates a marginal in Reunion Creole.
In this intense solo, Didier Boutiana questions the exclusion, whether imposed or chosen, and the traces it leaves in the body. His dance, between power and fragility, draws from his experience and from the soul of Reunion, mixing the power and energy of the Break Dance with the sensitivity and the depth of contemporary dance.
Carried by the bewitching sound universe of Labelle and Maya Kamaty, Reunion artists of electro pop Maloya, “ Kanyar Is also the portrait of an artist who, who started from a popular district, conquered the scenes of the world. It is a sort of a choreographic journey where creolity sheds light on universal questions such as identity, freedom and relationship to the other.
But who is this choreographer full of passion? Didier Boutiana has been developing for over 15 years a dance that connects the scene to society, carried by the conviction that art can transform individuals such as collectives. Between hip-hop and contemporary dance, its creations-such as “the salt of the earth” or “the soil obliges”-tell the story of its territory and question the themes of the rite, the fight and the identity.
Committed to transmission and inclusion, he also leads the Wagon program, which supports hundreds of young people far from artistic practices towards emancipation and self -confidence each year. His work, anchored in Reunion but open to the world, makes culture, social commitment and contemporary creation dialogue.
On the sidelines of the presentation of ” Kanyar », Didier Boutiana will also host a masterclass For professional dancers on Wednesday September 11 and Saturday September 13 at IFM. A privileged time to share your artistic approach, explore the crossings between hip-hop and contemporary dance, and offer participants an immersion in the heart of its creative universe.
