After three years of research, Andry Herinaranda Andriamandroso, defended his doctoral thesis in governance and regional integration at the Pan -African University of the African Union, Pole of Excellence in Human and Social Sciences (Paughss) in Cameroon on February 07, 2025 . This great enthusiast in the world of tourism and the development economy has chosen to work on “three tests on the effects of tourism on sustainable development in African Indian Ocean countries”, subject of his thesis.
Regional strategies
Indeed, the objective of the latter is to assess the effect of tourism on the three crucial dimensions of sustainable development. The first test assesses the effect of tourism on economic growth, using a self -regressive distributed discrepancy model applied to data from 2000 to 2022. It shows that tourism promotes long -term economic growth with an increase of 0.60 % gross domestic product for each 1 % increase in tourism income. The second test examines the effect of tourism on income inequalities in African island countries of the Indian Ocean, revealing that tourism development tends to reduce income inequalities. Finally, the third test analyzes the effect of tourism on the quality of the environment, showing that tourism expansion increases carbon dioxide emissions, thus aggravating environmental problems in these islands. This study highlights the need to adopt regional sustainable development strategies to balance the economic benefits of tourism with social and environmental imperatives.
